Artist's statement

My growing interest in felt and felting techniques has developed over the past ten years, although my initial introduction to felt came quite by chance, as I completed my City and Guild's Embroidery course in Edinburgh a few years prior to this. I now consider myself a feltmaker and so enjoy the actual process of felting by hand. The richness and subtleties of colour and the diversity of textural permutations which can be created with fibre is often a surprise and always challenging. Often drawing inspiration from the time I lived and worked in Africa, and from subsequent travels in America, Australia and other journeys in Africa, my work now evidences my love of line and geometric shapes. Seeking to create a unique and recognisable style I have been experimenting with innovative techniques using manipulated and pixelated images. This technique is most time consuming but produces interesting results when viewed from a distance. Use of different types of fibre to achieve varying textural surfaces when making vessels has led to other developments which I now wish to push further.
