Elma Colvin
Artist's Statement
After taking the City and Guilds Certificate at Telford College, I
studied Drawing and Painting at the Edinburgh College of Art. However
I have since returned to my earlier interest in Textile Art and have
been a professional member of VAS since 1987 and Convener of Applied
Art for two years.
I first exhibited at the Embroiderers' Guild at
Hampton Court in 1987, since then with the Society of Women Artists
and annually with Visual Arts Scotland at the Royal Scottish Academy
Building. Other exhibitions include the Commonwealth Society London,
the Macmanus Gallery Dundee, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow and other
venues. Group touring exhibitions include 'The Three Strands
Exhibitions' (NSEG) and 'Raw Materials' (Sponsored by the Scottish Arts
Council).
In recent years, I have explored a broad range of subject
matters and techniques including Pictish/Celtic themes, mythological
illustration and animal studies. I have developed a distinctive style
that includes a blend of dyed and painted silks, machine embroidery
and appliqué mainly, but not exclusively, in large wall hangings.
