Frances Justice
Artist's statement
I trained at Duncan of Jordanstone in Textile Design and Embroidery followed by teacher training in Dundee. While teaching in secondary education I was invited to lecture at Duncan of Jordanstone where I spent a number of years developing the skills of non-vocational students in creative embroidery.
Since the inaugural exhibition of Embryo in 1981 ( the Dundee part of 'edge') I have exhibited with the group at various venues including the McManus Galleries Dundee, Paisley Art Galleries and Museum and the City Arts Centre Edinburgh. I have continued to exhibit with edge-textile artists scotland since its formation in the year 2000.
I find most of my inspiration in the Scottish landscape and natural form, and strive to capture the special atmosphere and wonderful light. I particularly enjoy working with natural fabrics such as silk, chiffon, fine cotton, hand made paper and hand made felt changing the surfaces to create the textures I want.
Other techniques I enjoy exploring are machine embroidery, surface stitchery, spraying and hand painting.
