Winter Solstice
Artist's statement
I left Glasgow School of Art with a D.A. in Drawing and Painting after four exciting years. Embroidery and weaving was my craft subject and Cath Whyte an inspirational teacher. She has had a life long influence on my work!
For several years I taught art in Scottish secondary schools but with a growing family to look after I turned to evening class teaching and when time allowed, creative stitching. I spent the years 1993 - 1997 at Telford College, Edinburgh completing the City & Guilds Embroidery course which led to exhibiting in various City & Guilds exhibitions. I now also exhibit with other groups including: Group XII, Paper Paint and Stitch, and edge - textile artists scotland.
My source of inspiration comes mainly from landscape drawing and painting and my passion for colour and texture as well as my enjoyment of the Scottish landscape. I work in mixed media, dyeing fabrics, felting and stitching by hand and machine. I am presently indulging my love of colour and texture with an interest in archaeological remains, the Roman site, Vindolanda in Northumberland being the inspiration for my present piece of work.
