Artist's statement

My introduction to textiles was through the conventional route of dressmaking and knitting for the family, including dolls and home furnishings. My first awareness of the world of creative textiles was through the new exclusive hand produced designer knit wear, subtle colours combined with exciting designs, but more importantly from the diploma and degree shows of the textile departments of Telford College and Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities.

On completion of the City and Guilds Course Parts 1 & 2 in Creative Embroidery at Telford College I became a professional member of the New Scottish Embroidery Group, and subsequently a member of 'edge' at its inauguration in 1999, and have exhibited with both Groups.

I work in whichever techniques are suggested by the design concept, sometimes based on pattern and the manipulation of fabric and stitch in a controlled manner, or more freely making a machine stitched textured fabric using dyed and printed materials.

My sources of inspiration are mainly from land/cityscapes and from natural form, using photographs for references, and also from Museum exhibitions from around the world.
It is always fascinating to observe the uses and combinations of colours in landscapes and in every day life.

It is a challenge to work towards exhibitions and maybe another challenge would be to produce free-standing 3-dimensional pieces!
