Sea Wall 1
Artist's statement
A career break from history teaching led me to stitched textiles via City & Guilds creative embroidery. During the last fifteen years I have exhibited widely in the UK and elsewhere. Commissions include a hanging for the Royal Bank of Scotland and the design and supervision of the Berwick-upon-Tweed panel for the Northern Arts project The Needle Points North. I teach privately and for Scottish Embroidery Tutors, and the Embroiderers' Guild.
Feltmaking has always been a component of my work leading to exhibiting with several groups e.g. The International Feltmakers Association, Diverse Fibres and Fibre X Four.
I like to use a mixture of free machine appliqué with hand dyed fabrics, hand-made felt, paper, plaster and hand stitch. Working on mainly two dimensional wall-hangings, I am interested in using colour, texture and composition to create a feeling of space and to evoke a spirit of place inspired by landscape or architecture.
