Artist's statement

After studying printed textiles and embroidery at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, I taught in various schools and off-site provisions in the city before becoming a tutor at Dundee College. I teach the City & Guilds Stitched Textiles courses but I have recently been working with HNC/D Textile and Fashion students and some of the Introduction to Art & Design classes. I was a member of Embryo, the Dundee Art College Textile Artist group for 20 years and have been a member of edge - textile artists scotland since its inception in 2000. Working with fabric and thread has always been an interest and I enjoy the tactile and fluid qualities of material, as well as the richness of surface texture that can be built up. I am presently interested in the creation of fabrics through bonding and embellishing making up unique surfaces on which to sew. One of the main sources of inspiration in my work is colour and for several years I have used the colours and textures of Italy where weathered stone and surfaces hint at the history of place. Layers peeling back time as well as layers of peeling paint. Holidays to Australia and more recently to India have added a different palette of colours to work with and these will hopefully start to show in future pieces.
