Artist Statement

Travel journals, sketch books and images accumulated from journeys at home and abroad have always provided me with an inspirational source of material to draw on. However more recently, it is the natural environment, the surrounding landscape of the Pentlands, the changing seasons and their effect on the local flora that I have enjoyed recording through mark making, drawing and photography.

The written word and, increasingly the response to poetry, is central to my thinking. Information gathering through additional research is an important follow on to this. Reading, museum visits (sometimes virtual), and techniques such as mind maps, help to explore and develop initial ideas which often I find appropriate to express in book format.

I continue to be drawn to working with natural fibres, in particular linen, and to working with paper and print using mostly hand stitch to layer images, colours and textures.
